HIV travel restriction waived for Chicago Gay Games

As anticipated, a blanket waiver to allow non-U.S. citizens living with HIV/AIDS to travel to the United States to participate in or attend the Gay Games 2006 has been granted, clearing the way for many sports and cultural participants and their families and friends to join in the Gay Games.

"Many people with HIV/AIDS and other life-affecting health issues have competed and set Masters-division records at past Gay Games, and we are happy that all participants from outside the United States once again will be able to travel freely to attend the Gay Games this summer," said FGG Co-President Kathleen Webster.

Never too late to try the triathlon!

Three years ago, Jamie Roberson, a self-described "desk-bound non-jock," figured swimming a few laps of the local pool would be no sweat.

Two laps later, out of breath, she had a change of heart. A change of perspective. And a change of purpose. Now she is training to compete in the triathlon at the 2006 Gay Games in Chicago, having previously participated in the 1994 New York Gay Games as a tuba player in Team Band.

Jamie is just one of the thousands of athletes and cultural participants registered and actively preparing for the Gay Games. For many, it will be there first Gay Games competition. For others, it will be their first sports competition ever.

You can read about Jamie's on-going training in the Participants section of the FGG website.

Several sports are nearing capacity for Chicago, and discount rates for groups of 5 or more remain. For registration information, click here.

Tom Waddell Award nominations open soon

One of the honored Gay Games traditions is the opportunity to participate in the recognition awarded to individuals who have made a superlative difference in the lives of all Gay Games participants.

Every four years, the Federation of Gay Games honors outstanding contributions to the LGBT community by presenting the Tom Waddell Award. First presented at Gay Games III in Vancouver in 1990, the award highlights Gay Games founder Dr. Tom Waddell's philosophy of participation being valued above victory.

One woman and one man will be recognized at the Gay Games in Chicago as this year's recipients.
The nomination form will be available soon on the Federation’s website, and nominations will be due by 15 April. A press release will present details
about eligibility criteria, the FGG Web address to submit nominations, and the process by which this year's recipients will be chosen.

Past Tom Waddell Award recipients:

  • 1990 — Paul Mart
  • 1994 — Rikki Streicher
  • 1998 — Ruth Gursky
  • 2002 — Stuart Borrie and Susan Kennedy

2006 GAY SPORTS AND CULTURE CALENDAR -
ADD YOUR EVENT!

Although the Gay Games is the most prestigious event in the LGBT Sports Calendar in 2006, there
are many other LGBT sports and cultural events taking place thoughout the year.

Many Gay Games participants will look for events before July to practice their skills. Those who attend the Games may want to explore the opportunities to carry on with their chosen sport or take up a new one they have seen - so it's important to add your upcoming sports and cultural events to the Federation of Gay Games Calendar. To do so, click here.

Giving to the Gay Games

Chicago 's corporate sponsorship program has been remarkable in reaching new levels of in-kind and cash sponsorships previously unseen in the LGBT community. It has raised far and above more than any previous Gay Games.

Chicago 's funding is based primarily on private enterprise and individual support, not a government-funded approach. More than 150 businesses and organizations have already signed up as sponsors, and significant Chicago-area donors have also joined the Gay Games Honorary Committee, a host group chaired by Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley.

New York in '94 conducted a successful direct mail fundraising campaign for Gay Games IV, and Chicago recently sent out its own direct mail piece to capitalize on this successful fundraising opportunity. Individual contributions inspire corporate support, and success breeds success. Donations for Gay Games VII can be made here.

Supporters for the Gay Games Movement are also supporting the FGG's separate scholarship fund, which helps bring people from under-represented populations and hostile conditions to the life-changing Games. Information about donating to the FGG scholarship fund can be found on the FGG website.

Gay Games 'three-rings' logo available for teams going to Chicago

FGG Rings Logo

Teams preparing for Chicago 2006 can demonstrate their pride in being part of the Gay Games movement by having the official Gay Games logo added to their uniforms and other merchandise. The Federation of Gay Games has created a simple procedure that teams can follow to gain permission to add the universally-known “interlocking rings” that form the Gay Games logo.

Teams of all types (representing cities, countries, or individual disciplines) now have an opportunity to make their Gay Games experience even better.

To apply for use of the Gay Games logo, or if you have any questions regarding this opportunity for your team, click here to send an e-mail describing your circumstances and interest in this exciting program.
