Grooving on the East Rand

Blues Bar set to challenge current standards

Germiston is the venue for the opening of a new club intent on not skimping on decor and marketing the way Johannesburg gays have become used to. The former library, now a national monument, is home to Johannesburg's newest gay bar in what decidedly looks like a winner.

The building itself hails from 1922 and has been hosting the city's library which closed in 1983. Since then there has been a succession of restaurants, and now, a gay bar.

The owner is 30-year-old Neels Viljoen who grew up in the Freestate. A former banking employee, intends making Blues Bar into the happening in Johannesburg together with his partner, Simon.

The bar is actually a club with something for everyone, including a "sleaze" bar with obligatory erotic videos, another bar with restaurant and dance area.

For patrons who are more competitively minded there is a pool table and an electronic dart board. Neels intends having a variety of activities on different days, such as pool competitions on Mondays, a lesbian evening on Tuesdays and parties on Wednesdays. For Thursdays he plans having boys night and on weekends, more parties.

Blues Bar opens its doors on Saturday, 30 January, 1999. There will also, by the way, be a stripper to make the occasion official. Should the other bars and clubs in Johannesburg be worried? Yes, they should!
