Greylingstad, Mpumalanga Province
Brief introduction.
reylingstad now falls under Mpumalanga. It was previously located south-eastern Transvaal. Greylingstad's history is tied up with the Anglo-Boer war and started as a British fort on a hill that now overlooks the town. The Scottish Rifles regiment's initials can still be seen on the rocks in the area.
This part of the province is dominated by the Vaal River system that starts in the Swaziland mountains, a couple of hundred kilometeres away. There are many streams all over that eventually become the Vaal River. The San people named the river "Gij Gariep" (meaning "tawny"). In colonial times it was named the Vaal (meaning "gray").
