GAASA features at Germiston 1200m race

Germiston 1200m
Long distance swimming is becoming more popular in South Africa especially amongst the gay and lesbian community.

By Gary Coetzee
S

unday the 28th January 2001 saw thousands of swimmers take to the water in the annual Germiston 1200m across the lake swim.

An immensely hot day saw some impressive bronzed or by this time red sinnered beings take to the water. Two GAASA members were also part of the group that took to the challenge, in the Mens 31 and over category Owen van Reenen completed in a comfortable 23:34;24 - impressive after a long lay off from the water due to a back injury. While in the Mens 18-30 category, Gary Coetzee finished 10th in a time of 17:33;43 to take the silver medal.

Long distance or dam swimming is becoming very popular in South Africa and especially in the gay and lesbian community. A number of known community members compete regularly in open water / dam swims but unfortunately do not compete under the GAASA banner. The Gay Aquatics Alliance (GAASA) in its attempt to encourage gay and lesbians to partake in swimming for either competitive or fitness reasons would like to encourage all to register with the group and build a strong unified team, especially for Sydney 2002.
